Two Hearts
Jayson knocked on the door of his childhood home. It had been two years since his last visit which came after the passing of his biological mother. Since he and his father left when he was eight years old, Jayson hadn’t visited often. And the times he had visited it was for reasons similar to today.
The door of the farmhouse opened to reveal a short, deeply tanned woman of mixed Pilipino descent. She was thin and attractive hiding full C cups under her tank top.
“Jayson?” The woman asked.
“Brittany?” Jayson replied having only talk to her on the phone.
“Yeah. Wow, I would have recognized you anywhere,” Brittany said with a smile. “Come on in.”
Jayson walked into the house and found that nothing had changed from his last visit. The place even still smelled like cedar. That was one of things that he did miss. The smell of cedar always reminded him of this home.
“I’m so glad you came. I don’t know what to do anymore. He just lies there all day. If I don’t bring him food he doesn’t eat. I can’t even get him to leave the bedroom anymore. So I was thinking that since you two are twins you could help him somehow.”
Brittany paused as she fought back her tears. “I just don’t know what else to do.”
Jayson walked over to the fireplace and examined the pictures on the mantle. The most prominent was the one of him and Jaxson together. It was taken when they were seven and was from their first hunting trip. Both wore identical camouflage jackets and held identical kid-sized rifles. The picture reminded Jayson how much they had both enjoyed being twins.
The picture also made Jayson consider how different their lives would have been if they weren’t split up by their parent’s divorce a year later. Jayson still called his brother often from Los Angeles where he and his dad moved, but nothing could replace being with each other in person.
“Where is he?” Jayson asked leaving his travel bag and heading to the hallway leading to the bedrooms.
“He’s in his room.”
Jayson walked down the hall to their childhood bedroom. After a pause he opened the door. The bedroom was updated to that of an adult’s but it didn’t contain Jaxson.
“He doesn’t sleep in there anymore,” Brittany corrected when she saw Jayson’s confusion. “We moved into the master bedroom.”
Jayson looked further down the hallway and found his mom’s room. It was odd to think of anyone in there but his mother, but as he thought about it, it only made sense.
Jayson pushed on the open door at the end of the hall and found a completely renovated room. The farmhouse ceiling had been gutted and turned into an open ceiling with exposed beams. The room had been extended and painted to look like exposed brick, and the floors had been resurfaced to look like hard wood. This room in the country farmhouse had been renovated to look like a Malibu, California loft. Or
